Why 'I'm Not Feeling Well' Beats Elaborate Excuses
Specific symptoms invite questions. A short, vague phrase ends the conversation gracefully — and is easier to deliver.

The detail trap
When we lie a little, we tend to over-decorate. We add the symptom, the timing, the doctor we already called. Each detail is a hook for a follow-up question.
"I had a fever last night and a sore throat this morning."
The receiver hears: ask me about the fever. Ask me about the throat. Did I take anything for it? Am I going to a doctor?
A vague phrase has no hooks.
"I'm not feeling well today."
There's nothing to follow up on. Most reasonable managers will respond with "feel better" and move on. That's the whole point.
Why this isn't the same as lying
"Not feeling well" is genuinely true a lot of the time. Tired, anxious, mid-migraine, low-energy, recovering from yesterday — all qualify. The phrase doesn't make a clinical claim. It opts out of a clinical conversation.
When you genuinely can't pull this off
If you have a manager who needs more or you've used "not feeling well" three times this month, switch frames:
"I need to take a personal day today."
"Personal" is also un-hooked. It's also generally true.
The honest alternative
For people who are on your team, in the long run, candour does work. The version of this conversation worth having when you can:
"I'm running on empty and need a day to reset. I've moved [meeting] and [deliverable] so nothing should be blocked."
